Our favourite new interior design trends on social media

Social media has emerged as a powerful catalyst shaping interior design decisions across multiple industries. The seamless integration of platforms like Instagram, Pinterest, and Houzz has revolutionised how we perceive, consume, and contribute to interior design trends.

From interior spaces to architectural marvels, social media is an expansive canvas for design enthusiasts, professionals, and homeowners alike.

Trends such as the Urban Aunt, Coastal Grandmother and Unexpected Red Theory are prime examples that social media has the power to influence the interior design landscape.

1. Urban Aunt

The "Urban Aunt" aesthetic is what everybody's talking about - so what exactly is it? And who on earth is this person?

If you've ever visited that chic, trendy and child-free aunt who lived in a stylish apartment -  that looked like it came straight out of an interior design magazine -that's precisely who we're talking about.

Vintage pieces, including sideboards, coffee tables, chairs, lamps, and other trinkets, are crucial design features of this trend - incorporated with contemporary design elements. Luxurious textures play a significant role in the overall feel of cosy glamour. Another element of the 'Urban Aunt' trend is statement lighting - envision stylish chandeliers or large pendants that exude the wow factor. This lighting should balance elegance and modernity, prioritising style as much as functionality.

2. Coastal Grandmother

You've probably heard the internet buzz about the coastal grandma style. If you haven't, picture the tastefully casual heroines of Nancy Meyers movies, like Diane Keaton in Something's Gotta Give, or Meryl Streep in It's Complicated, in all their neutral-cotton-sweater-and-linen-pants-clad glory. While this was the 2023 TikTok sensation, now being succeeded by the Urban Aunt, we still feel she has sufficient timeless appeal to continue influencing.

Is coastal style new? Not really. Beach-inspired style has always been popular, but this current take is more modern and pared-down than in the past and completely clear of themed kitsch, like shells, anchors, and whales. It's less "Ahoy, matey" nautical and more an airy, effortless chic that's informal but polished.

3. Unexpected Red Theory

An interior design trend born out of a viral TikTok video championing the addition of red "in places where it has no business" is the focus of our latest lookbook.

The "unexpected red theory" was coined by Brooklyn-based interior designer Taylor Migliazzo Simon in a video with over 900,000 views on TikTok.

Simon describes it as "adding anything that's red, big or small, to a room where it doesn't match at all", with the result that "it automatically looks better".

The theory suggests that red is as versatile as a neutral colour because it can work in almost any palette of colours and materials, either as an accent or complementary tone.
