April Holidays - Hiking Vacation

With the April holidays fast approaching, and winter incoming too, now is the perfect time to book a holiday and enjoy the last of the summer sun. Read more for the best hiking vacations to visit this Easter in Cape Town, Knysna and Johannesburg.

Cape Town

While being world-renowned for the splendour of Table Mountain, we've included a few of Cape Town's most demanding hiking trails for you to venture across this Easter. Platteklip Gorge is certainly a work-out, and trails directly to the summit of Table Mountain. Taking roughly 3 hours to traverse, it is important to bring rehydration supplies and sun protection for the journey. Make sure not to miss the final cable car down the mountain!

The Tygerberg Nature reserve is a great escape from the expanding urban jungle of Bellville, and is abundant in space, plant, and animal life. With panoramic views on offer, and over 350 Hectares of land to explore, the Nature Reserve is the perfect place to spend quality family time. There are wheelchair friendly routes and a few picnic areas available, but be sure to pack supplies for the ever-unpredictable Cape Town weather.

Knysna

Making our way down the Wild Coast and into Knysna, the famous Heads Heritage walk is number one on the list. Nestled along the towering cliffs that greet you from miles away, a stunning pathway emerges along the Eastern Head, overlooking the lagoon with gorgeous panoramic views of the ocean and back into the town. There is a cost of R150 per person, and bring along any supplies you may need.

Now if you are with extended family, what could be better than a sight-seeing trip with the full team involved. The Great Brak River Mouth, in fact one of the most renowned landmarks in the area, features a beautiful stretch of running streams and sand-banks. Perfect for a quiet walk or evening run with your favourite furry friends. Make sure to bring a leash! Situated right before the crossing of Narrow Bridge leading to Brak River Island. Please bring a donation to support CAWS4PAWS.

Johannesburg

Into the City of Gold we continue, and straight up the Suikerbosrand Trails. Depending on your mood, you can walk a few short trails or extend your stay for several days, with a network of over 60 Km of trails. Everyone starts at the info center, where permits are required and bookings can be made for the huts to stay overnight. The Suikerbosrand Reserve is situated close to Heidelberg, Southeast Johannesburg.

Heading back into the mountains, the Hartbeespoort Dam Hiking Trails are a great place to take the family to explore and enjoy all of the activities you could desire. Hiking the Magaliesberg Mountain Range is simply a stunning experience, and so is catching some air while hang-gliding. Make sure you have the camera packed for this long weekend!
