Investing in a stamp collection: why this hobby is considered a good investment.

Stamp collecting is a hobby which dates back hundreds of years, as people for centuries have avidly collected rare, unique and old stamps to create sprawling collections that can be truly lucrative in value. Collecting rare and coveted stamps can be an excellent investment, as the value of stamps continues to increase over time. If you still don't believe that stamp collecting can be a lucrative hobby, here are some of the most expensive stamps in the world:

1.The British Guiana - The rarest and most valuable stamp in the world is the British Guiana 1c Magenta, which holds an estimated value of 9 million euros.
2. The Treskilling Yellow - considered one of the most expensive postage stamps in the world due to the fact it should have been printed in a blue-green colour with the three-skilling print, but it was actually printed in yellow. This Swedish misprinted stamp issued in 1855 is believed to be the only surviving copy to exist, which is why it is worth over €2.1 million.
3. The First Two Mauritius - With only 26 known copies known to still exist and being the first British Commonwealth Stamps to be produced outside of Great Britain, it is no wonder that the Mauritius stamps hold a value of over €1 million each.
4. Baden 9 Kreuzer - Rather than being valuable for an image error, the Baden 9-Kreuzer is a moneymaker due to a colour error. Only four are known to exist and one was sold in 2008 for over €1 million.
5. Inverted Jenny - Another printing error is what placed the huge price tag on the Inverted Jenny. Now worth around €750,000, this stamp features an upside-down image of the Curtiss JN-4 airplane and was issued in the US in 1918. Only 100 copies managed to make it through printing, which is why the Inverted Jenny is valued so highly.

1. Union King's Head 5/-inverted Watermark - printed in 1913, this stamp has a recommended selling price of R1 200 000.
2. Cape of Good Hope - printed in 1855, this stamp has a recommended selling price of R710,000.
3. Inverted Table Mountain - printed in 1927, this stamp has a recommended selling price of R498,000.
4. Missing Double Frame Springbok - printed in 1927, this stamp has a recommended selling price of R426,000.
5. Center Inverted Union Parliament - printed in 1910, this stamp has a recommended selling price: R355,000.
