Oktoberfest: 10 of South Africa's Top 2025 Beer, Food and Family Festivals

Origins of Oktoberfest

The world's largest folk festival began not as a beer celebration, but as a grand horse race to mark a royal wedding. On 12 October 1810, Crown Prince Ludwig of Bavaria married Princess Therese of Saxe-Hildburghausen. To celebrate the occasion Andreas Michael Dall'Armi, a middle-class officer in the Bavarian National Guard, proposed holding an equestrian event on the fields outside Munich's city gates. King Max I Joseph approved and for five days - from the wedding through 17 October - Munich's citizens reveled in races, folk dress and pageantry on what came to be called the Theresienwiese ("Therese's Meadow"). Although there were no beer tents or fairground rides at that inaugural festival, the concept caught on so well that, by 1819, the Bavarian Agricultural Association took over the organisation and Munich made the celebration an annual tradition.

Over the 19th and 20th centuries, Oktoberfest has grown from a modest agricultural fair into a global celebration, with large breweries establishing extensive beer tents complete with live music to entertain growing crowds. Fairground attractions also evolved during this period, with carousel rides debuting in 1818 and gradually expanding into the wide variety of thrilling rides and games that continue to delight visitors of all ages today.Originally held in mid-October, warmer weather eventually prompted a shift to late September.
